my thoughts go out to the washburn family and i am sorry about maggie. as for the police department, i can't believe the they feel that is the correct way to handle a situation. my question is did they shoot this poor, scared, injured, loving pet in front of the children at the day care? if they weren't outside then surely they heard the shot inside. i'm just shocked that our local law enforcement is so thoughtless, and careless to the innocence of our community. Animals and children.

The deputy that shot the dog, did apologize and I respect that but for all the lies that are out there, I would like for that to be straightened up. And for any local police officers or anyone else who is lying about this incident I would like to see that they have a job in a different business besides "protecting and serving" the citizens of our town.

The good ole boy mentality seems to be alive and well in Newcastle even now. I guess I understand wanting to protect one of your own Greg but there is no previous evidence of aggressive behavior by Maggie. Regardless of that, the Sheriff was WRONG to shoot her, plain and simple.

funny that a city cop in the same town thinks that he knows the truth. If she attacked his dog y was it not called in (being a city cop. She never has taken after another dog always got along with other dogs, cats, kids and people a very loving dog. never seen her growl or tried to bit some one. The dog got out a few times but always came back. When I found out that she had been shot. They said that there was no collar but the lady that seen her there said she did and described the collar, (?) Something sounds fishy. A loving dog that was family and well loved.

Thank you all for your support in this situation. In no way, is this easy to deal with, I am hearing all kinds of stories that blow my mind for the plain fact that I didn't hear them from the sheriff's dept. So until I hear it straight from the Sheriff's dept I am calling a bullshit flag!!!! I am glad to have you guys supporting us, and our greatly missed family member, Maggie. And know that if you ever need back up on a pet situation, I am here for you.

Here is a little more info you might want to know. A lady at the children center was spoken with and she said that Maggie was not aggressive by any means and was also wearing her collar with tags when they reported her she even described the collar ,so either Maggie had lost her tags within the 5-10 minutes it took for the sheriff to get there or ??? Maggie has been our neighbor for 2 years now and I have never had a complaint, I have 4 kids that love to play outside and maggie would always join them and play ball and run around with them they just loved her!! We have always enjoyed Maggie and will greatly miss her. Also my question is why didn't the police department dispatch the dog catcher? Isn't that her job, and if shooting a dog when it barks at you is the right thing to do then why doesn't the dog catcher get to carry a gun?
